Pre School

Pre School

We Strive To:

  • Effectively prepare the children for the next stage in their education, by learning through play.
  • Enhance the development and education of all children – we like to involve parents/carers to create a happy community based group.
  • Provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment.
  • Work within the statutory framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage, which believes every child deserves the best start in life.
  • Support every child so they can fulfil their potential, ensuring equality of opportunity for all the children and families.

We Can Offer Your Child:

  • An in depth and specially tailored curriculum developed through the Early Years Foundation Stage framework leading to approved learning outcomes with the support of a personal key worker.
  • We are committed to providing equal opportunities for all individuals and meeting all children’s requirements including special and additional needs. One member of the team is SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator).
  • Individual care and attention made possible by the high ratio of adults to children.
  • Fun and friendship with children and other adults.
  • We have easy access to our very own garden, which includes a mud kitchen, climbing frame, bikes, cars, prams, bubbles! The list is endless! If your children wants to play then we will find a way!

We offer a wonderful choice of activities using a vast range of different creative materials and methods including painting, drawing, writing, singing, sticking, collage, mural & mark making, reading and dressing up. Children can use and play with lots of toys, role-play food/shop items, construction and numerical games, books, puzzles, messy play and we often make food, soft dough, crafts and displays.

During every activity we pride ourselves on really encouraging conversation, opening up the world of words and numbers. We discuss not only feelings, opinions and ideas but will also explore how the world around us works so that the children become relaxed, happy, knowledgeable and confident. We have an extraordinary amount of fun whilst being respectful and kind to one another.

Every term we carefully plan our sessions so activities are based around a variety of fun, educational themes. In addition to this we adapt activities daily so that they specifically relate to the likes, needs and challenges of each individual child who is attending that day.

Our Day In Wren's Class

In Wrens we offer a stimulating play base environment which supports the areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage. The class is set up for children to involve themselves in challenging activities to develop and extend their learning. We will develop learning based upon the children’s interests as well as aspects of the Knowledge urriculum we use from Reception class up.

In Literacy we provide opportunities for the children to develop their fine motor skills for writing. We have reading areas where children have access to a wide range of story books. The children are also introduced to phonics.

In the Maths area children are able to explore and develop their knowledge of number, shape, space and measure. Children are able to access a range of maths activities, which require them to identify and recognise numbers. Children can also create and explore pattern and shape in the environment. For example, children will go on a shape hunt in the class or in our outdoor garden. They can collect leaves or objects to create their own pattern as well.

We have a home corner which provides children with opportunities to re-enact experiences they have had at home with their family and friends. Children will share experiences such as making cupcakes or helping with the cooking and washing up. There are also opportunities for dressing up. Children develop their communication and language skills as they will ask questions about aspect they have observed at home.

During Art activities, the children are able to access a wide range of materials, paint and collage resources. Children will learn how to safely use resources such as scissors, as well as explore what happens when they mix colours and experiment with materials to create different textures.

Children in Wren's have access to our their garden area, where activities are set up for children to explore and learn. This includes a mud kitchen, Digging area and Sand pit. Children are able to discuss the changes, similarities and differences in the environment as the seasons change.

There are physical development areas where children develop their fine and gross motor skills. This includes throwing and catching and balancing. Children learn how to jump off an object and land appropriately, negotiate space successfully when using bikes and scooters and travel with confidence around, under, over and through balancing and climbing equipment.

Pupils in Wren's join our reception Class twice a week for 'Bikes and Trikes' sessions, a weekly school library visit and also attend singing assembly with rest of school on Thursday.

How can I help with my child's learning?

All the fun activities that you do with your child at home are important in supporting their learning and development and have long lasting effects on your child's learning as they progress through school.

Even when your child is very young and not yet able to talk, talking to them helps them to learn and understand new words and ideas. If you make the time every day to do some of the following things with your child it can make a real difference to your child's confidence as a young learner.

  • Sing to them and tell them nursery rhymes.
  • Talk about numbers, colours, words and letters you see when you are out and about.
  • Allow your child to cut and stick pictures from magazines.
  • Cook/bake together.
  • Plant seeds or bulbs in a pot or garden patch.
  • Use the weather: shadows, rain, puddles, snow, wind, mist and sun to extend your child's vocabulary.
  • Explore the park at different times of the years.
  • Share a book.
  • Talk to your child at every opportunity e.g.what are you doing today?
  • On a trip to the supermarket, talk about all the different packaging and shapes.

Try to talk to your child's key person as often as possible about what your child has been doing, what they have enjoyed, what they needs to be doing more of and what you can do at home.
